COMMENT

This page is a space for critical responses - firstly two pieces by Hannah Nussbaum and other papers and reviews follow.

Annotated Butterworth – Masters Paper, Hannah Nussbaum, The Royal College of Art 2018. Edited and annotated by Hannah Nussbaum, tutors Jeremy Millar and Brian Dillon, design/art direction Jacob Pardoe, cover art Stephen Greenhalgh.

Hannah’s paper is one of the first pieces to look at my work as a whole and covers my early writing for New Worlds and other publications during the 1960’s and 70’s.

‘An inward-looking outer space’: A brief history of Corridor – Article, Hannah Nussbaum, Corridor8 2019. A history of Corridor magazine (1968-1976) leading up to its resurrection in 2009 as contemporary art and writing journal Corridor8. Hannah’s article covers the beginnings of my career as an author-publisher. As a young writer I was urged to be more prolific by JG Ballard, and to avoid forcing work I chose to start a journal.

In flagrante delicto

Reviews, comments, attributions, from the beginning. The momentous start of it was, for me, the sale I made to Michael Moorcock of 'Girl', which appeared in New Worlds May 1965.

1966

“‘Girl’… will not appeal to a lot of people. One of the present reviewers summed it up in two (derogatory) words, but the other is cautiously enthusiastic about it. No explanations offered: read it for yourselves.”
